April Flash Fiction Challenge & Writing Giveaway!

Coinciding with NaNoCamp this month, I’m teaming up with a fellow writer from #Bookstagram to host a Flash Fiction Challenge & Giveaway!  Visit the challenge post on my Instagram (link in sidebar) for the full details on how to enter the giveaway.  But even if you don’t participate on Instagram, feel free to use these prompts and post to your blog or other social media accounts.  Share and tag me, so I can read!

I love flash fiction.  It’s a great exercise for the creative muscles and wonderful practice at “show, don’t tell” because you don’t have enough words to tell.  I used to do regular flash, and I’m trying to get back to at least a weekly fic. Stay tuned for more in the future!

Here’s my fic for this week’s photo prompt:

“Are you going to sit there sulking all night?” Lise’s voice asks from the darkness at my back. I take the last swig from the scavenged bottle in my hand, and then chuck it into the waves to distract her from my face as I scrub the gathering tears from my eyes.

“I don’t sulk.”

“Whatever you say,” she answers as she settles beside me. In the distance I hear the rest of the gang laughing and talking by the bonfire down the beach.

She tucks her spindly legs up to her chest and rests her head on them, blinking at me with those large owl-eyes that always see too much, even at night. Especially at night.

Of all of them, she is always watching me. Waiting for me to say or do something, to lead? Or maybe to break.

Everyone breaks. Eventually.

We’ve carved a makeshift life out of this graveyard of ships. We have shelter from the sun, safety from the packs of wandering wild dogs, and when the prophesied flood comes, we will be ready.

It was my idea to come here. To band together for strength. To assign people jobs to keep them busy, keep their minds off the tragedies that brought us here and help the group as a whole. They all wait to hear me speak before they act. But I am no leader.

I can’t be their leader. I can’t live with anymore blood on my hands. /244 words

When will body positivity meet literary diversity?

Diversity is shaping up to be the word of the decade. From the White House to the Oscars to literature, it’s a hot topic. As it should be.

As both an author and reader, I’m taking steps to curb the gross bias against non-white, non-hetero, and disabled people in our literature. I’m reading more diverse (especially diverse authors) and being far more conscious of the diversity in my own writing than I ever have before, because I have come to see how much REPRESENTATION MATTERS.   Continue reading “When will body positivity meet literary diversity?”

Fiction Friday: Bargaining with Shadows

hohlwen-quote

It’s Friday, so I thought I’d share a little snippet from my upcoming urban fantasy romance, To Tame A Wild Heart.

PRE-ORDER NOW!

(Delivered June 21st)

The scene below is one of my favorites, because it is the first time I’ve had a chance to delve deeper into a Hohlwen character.  The Hohlwen (Hollow Ones) are immortal fallen angels made of darkness. They must siphon the “mana” of other living creatures to survive, and Zyne witches provide the most satiating meal.  This book made me explore more about their history, their powers, and the dynamic between them and the Zyne (hint: because they pose such a threat, the Hohlwen have been conquered/enslaved by the ruling body of the Zyne, the Synod. They’re not too happy about that arrangement.)

You can see the visual inspiration for the Hohlwen on my Pinterest Board. Continue reading “Fiction Friday: Bargaining with Shadows”

Fiction Friday: Illuminated

This is an “added scene” that takes place several months before the events in Skydancer Book 1. Astrid is one of my favorites, and I look forward to telling more of her story as the series expands. For a glimpse into the world of the Zyne Legacy, including what all of the characters look like (as children and adults), visit my Rain of Ash Pinterest Board.

Astrid wasn’t an Oracle. She’d only studied the basics of divination, and even that was sketchy. Still, she thought, zigzagging her way down the jagged hillside to the beach, it was Ostara – the Spring Equinox. For the briefest of moments, her little part of the earth would be cast in equal parts light and shadow. For the briefest of moments, the energies of the Conduit would be in perfect balance. If she was lucky – and prepared, which she was – she could maybe get a tiny glimpse of the future.
