A Simple Home Cleansing & Blessing Ritual

home-blessingI’ve moved almost twenty times. Most recently, I moved into a new house that I will be leasing with my boyfriend for the next two years. Upon getting the keys, my first instinct was to go there and do my usual home blessing. Of course, this was odd to my excruciatingly pragmatic boyfriend, so I found myself explaining it to him. I expected him to laugh at me, or at least give me that “I don’t really understand you but I love you anyway” look. Instead, he listened, and when I was through, he said, “You should do that. I want our home to be blessed.”

Which was a lesson to me – if you take the time to explain the intention behind something, almost everyone will appreciate a blessing, prayer, good wishes, etc. So I thought I would share my simple ritual that I repeat every time I claim a new space as my home. It is a mish-mash of traditions handed down by my mother, Feng Shui, and my own twist relying heavily on the four elements.

Mystic Monday: The Quickening Moon

mystic-monday

Whether you are tuned in to the lunar energies or not, tonight’s full moon is an auspicious one. The Quickening Moon, in druid tradition, only occurs every four years, when there are 13 full moons in a solar cycle. In other traditions, it always follows directly on the heels of Imbolc, the festival that celebrates the return of the sun. The energies for this moon are those of seeds readying to burst forth into the imminent Spring. This can manifest in many ways, such as bringing forth new ideas, reaching for new goals, forming new relationships, transformations, shedding old layers, or finally seeing the light at the end of a long and dark inward journey.

This (leap)year, the Quickening Moon takes place in the sign of Virgo – an intellectual, practical, and methodical sign. Virgo energy is about order, and most Virgos tend to be planners and make lists. The full moon is always a time for manifestation, but because this is a “bonus” moon, it is often used as a moment to pause and reflect before charging into the rest of the year ahead. Tapping in to the that Virgo energy, some good questions that might come up for reflection are:

Am I on the right path?

Do I really want what I’ve set my sights on?

Have I made all the preparations I can to make the path ahead clear and easy?

Is there anything still holding me back? If so, what can I release?

According to Kate Rose, this full moon will also be a culminating of energies set into motion months, or even years ago. The main point is that our hearts and souls are yearning for something – we have either gone inwards in search of it or have laid out plans to achieve it, and now is the final moment where we decide if we are truly committed to it. Once the seed germinates in the earth, there is no turning back to burrow into the ground again – it’s sun or bust!

Whether you are a practicing witch or just beginning to feel in to how the cosmic tides affect your life, I hope you make the most of this powerful moon. See you on the other side. 🙂

Happy Beltane! Fire, Flowers & The Birds and the Bees

sistersBeltane is the Celtic Pagan (and adopted by most Wiccans) spring fertility rite.  It is a celebration of LIFE  symbolized by flowers, feasting, drinking, dancing, bonfires… and what happens when you add all of those things together on a beautiful spring night. 😉  Though the Goddess is ever-present in Celtic Pagan traditions, this holiday focuses more on the God (The Sun/Fire, The Horned One, The Green Man), the male aspect of fertility (phallic symbols, anyone?), and general Spring randiness that’s probably to blame for Pagans getting such a bad rap for their “heathen ways.” LOL. It’s when the fields and livestock were blessed for a good growing season and harvest. I’m not going to detail the history of it – you can read more about it here if you want.
