    Building a Character with MBTI

Creating characters that readers can connect with is the key to writing kingdom.  Stories are all the same.  Unique worlds, though numerous and sometimes extremely vivid, are all just variations on a theme.  Characters are the only part of writing that can be truly unique and original.  Characters sell the story and the world and can stay with us long after the riveting action and intriguing backdrop have faded from memory. So, how to write a unique and memorable character? Most of them don’t spring fully formed into a writer’s mind.  It takes some effort to create a multi-dimensional made-up person!  It’s definitely not as simple as giving them an…

When will body positivity meet literary diversity?

Diversity is shaping up to be the word of the decade. From the White House to the Oscars to literature, it’s a hot topic. As it should be. As both an author and reader, I’m taking steps to curb the gross bias against non-white, non-hetero, and disabled people in our literature. I’m reading more diverse (especially diverse authors) and being far more conscious of the diversity in my own writing than I ever have before, because I have come to see how much REPRESENTATION MATTERS.

    Winter Writing Update

I took a much-needed vacation in mid-November and once I came back, it was as if the wind had gone out of my sails. Not in a bad way! 2017 Reading Wrap-Up

I got back in touch with my bookworm roots this year and it feels so damn good! I completed my Goodreads challenge of 50 books (54 total).  Aside from reading a ton, I also got hooked on audiobooks this year and am going to include that as a format I use routinely, AND I happened to stumble upon my online tribe: #bookstagram .  I am so thrilled to be welcomed into a community of readers who love to share and chat.  It brought so much joy back into reading and has been a personal & writing inspiration too. 2018 Intention: Your Focus Determines Your Reality

When I started ruminating on what my intention should be for the coming year, for the first time since I embarked on this journey, I came up blank.  I tried on a lot of different intentions and goals, but none of them resonated the way it has in the past when I find the right one.  I took that as a good sign, that I didn’t have some blaring need or imbalance to address.  But still…I needed my touchstone going forward.  I need an intention.  It is the idea that I use to filter all my other plans and goals: “Does this fit my intention?” If yes, proceed.  That’s what…
