THE TRAVELER
✨
She arrived in a forest this time. There was no telling where she would end up when she opened and fell through a portal. Sometimes in an echoing hall or a dusty library. Aboard a ship in the heart of a storm. On a mountainside overseeing a great battle.
.
Today, it was a quiet wood. Birds chirped merrily. The sound of hoofbeats came came from a distance.
.
There it was--her calling. Soon she would know why the portal had brought her here.
.
When it came upon her, the great white horse reared, nearly running the traveller off the road. The rider’s black hood fell back, revealing a young woman. Her face was covered in bruises and cuts, and a patch of blood matted her dingy blond hair to her scalp.
.
“I go to save my brother--they are going to execute him for a crime he did not commit,” she told the traveller.
.
The woman seemed sincere, her cause noble. The traveller nodded and held out her hand. The woman pulled her into the saddle behind her and they took off down the road. The sound of more hoofbeats and rattling armor trailed them--
.
“Théa, lunch is ready!” her mother called from the kitchen. Théa sighed and closed her book before turning her chair and wheeling to the doorway. She paused and glanced out the rain-slicked window at the backyard and the woods beyond. The storm battered the trees, and she heard an army of soldiers battering their shields...another battle calling.
.
After lunch.
.
A secret smile stole across her lips.

Here’s my contribution for week 3 of #flashfictionapril18
.
I tried to subtly use both prompts this time, making the story itself a bit of a facade. Thank you to everyone who has participated in this challenge--I’ve really enjoyed reading your stories! Go check out the hashtag to read the others.

Bardugo has so many amazing quotes, but this one is definitely my favorite. Manifestation magic, laws of attraction, answered prayers...it doesn’t matter what you call it, the first and most important part is KNOWING WHAT YOU WANT. I believe this with every fiber of my being: you can have it. Declare your intention or desire, keep your sights set on it, take small steps towards it daily (or start living like you already have it), and it will be yours!
•
➼ I’m about to set out on a pretty insane writing endeavor, but all my small steps have pushed me to this point, so it’s time to finally take that leap of faith!
•
Q O T D: What is something you were afraid to go for but were rewarded for taking the risk?

“Are you going to sit there sulking all night?” Lise’s voice asks from the darkness at my back. I take the last swig from the scavenged bottle in my hand, and then chuck it into the waves to distract her from my face as I scrub the gathering tears from my eyes.
.
“I don’t sulk.”
.
“Whatever you say,” she answers as she settles beside me. In the distance I hear the rest of the gang laughing and talking by the bonfire down the beach.
.
She tucks her spindly legs up to her chest and rests her head on them, blinking at me with those large owl-eyes that always see too much, even at night. Especially at night.
.
Of all of them, she is always watching me. Waiting for me to say or do something, to lead? Or maybe to break.
.
Everyone breaks. Eventually.
.
We’ve carved a makeshift life out of this graveyard of ships. We have shelter from the sun, safety from the packs of wandering wild dogs, and when the prophesied flood comes, we will be ready.
.
It was my idea to come here. To band together for strength. To assign people jobs to keep them busy, keep their minds off the tragedies that brought us here and help the group as a whole. They all wait to hear me speak before they act. But I am no leader.
.
I can’t be their leader. I can’t live with anymore blood on my hands. /244 words

🖊Hello loves! Here’s my contribution for #flashfictionapril18 week 1! Week 1 closes Saturday, so giddy up on those keyboards!
.
These short pieces are tricky! It’s always my goal to give a glimpse of the world, a relationship, a conflict, and some backstory. In this short format it is all mostly implied, which is what makes flash such a great show-don’t-tell exercise! I had several ideas for this photo, but this is the one that stuck. I guess I’m in an apocalyptic mood.🤷🏼♀️
.
.
QoTD (for writers): Do you do writing exercises regularly?
Answer: Haven’t for a long time, but I’m trying to get back in the habit.
